Talking through the problem

Andy will ask what is troubling you, when your symptoms began and how they affect everyday life. Your general health, previous injuries, other medical care and current medicines help build a useful picture. Tell him what you would like to do more comfortably, and about any concerns or preferences.

Examination, consent and choice

An examination may include looking at how you move and checking relevant joints, muscles or nerves. Andy will explain what he proposes and ask for your consent. You can ask questions, decline any part of the examination, pause or stop at any point.

Before treatment, you will discuss the findings, likely benefits, risks and alternatives. You can decline manipulation, acupuncture or any other technique. Say if you would prefer an approach without joint clicking or needles.

Clothing, comfort and what to bring

Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. Loose shorts or a vest may be helpful if they make you feel more comfortable. Adjusting or removing some clothing may help examine an area, but this will be discussed with you. Tell Andy if you would prefer to remain covered or change the approach.

Bring a list of your medicines and any relevant reports you already have. You are welcome to bring a companion. Contact the clinic before booking if you have an access or communication need you would like to discuss.

Will treatment happen at the first visit?

Treatment may be possible if the assessment shows it is appropriate and you want to proceed. It is not guaranteed: discussion, advice or arranging another care route may take priority. Some symptoms need a GP, physiotherapist or another healthcare service.

Advice and follow-up

Before you leave, Andy will discuss the proposed next steps, advice to follow, symptoms to look out for and how progress will be reviewed. Ask if anything is unclear. Follow-up appointments allow your progress and treatment preferences to be reviewed.

Read After your osteopathy appointment for information about possible after-effects, returning to activity and reviewing progress.

There is no requirement to commit to a fixed number of sessions or a maintenance schedule. If you plan to use insurance, check your cover and any referral or authorisation requirements before booking.
