What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to assessing and treating problems affecting the muscles, joints and related tissues.
• Osteopaths are regulated healthcare professionals in the UK, and you do not normally need a referral to make an appointment.
• I begin by taking a detailed medical history and discussing your symptoms and how they affect your everyday activities.
• An examination may include looking at posture and movement and assessing relevant joints, muscles and other tissues.
• I will explain my findings and discuss whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate for you.
• Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques and advice about movement or exercise.
• Where appropriate, I may also incorporate techniques such as medical acupuncture into your treatment.
About Osteopathy
Osteopathic treatment is tailored to the individual. Symptoms in one area can sometimes be influenced by the way other parts of the body are moving or functioning, so I consider the relevant joints, muscles and surrounding tissues as part of the assessment.
If your symptoms suggest that osteopathic treatment may not be appropriate, I will advise you accordingly and, where necessary, recommend that you seek further medical assessment.
Osteopathy can be suitable for people at different stages of life. The assessment and treatment approach is adapted to the individual, taking account of factors such as age, general health, medical history and the nature of their symptoms.
Anyone under the age of 16 should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK. By law, anyone using the title “osteopath” must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and meet its professional standards.
Andy Duckmanton is fully registered with the GOsC, registration number 6400, and has been registered since 2007.
Osteopaths complete recognised professional training before they can register and practise in the UK. Their education includes subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical examination and osteopathic techniques, together with supervised clinical practice.
Andy Duckmanton qualified from the British School of Osteopathy in 2007 with a BOst (Hons) degree in Osteopathy.

Your first appointment
We discuss your symptoms, medical history, medicines and the activities you want to get back to. An appropriate examination helps establish what may be contributing and whether care here or another medical assessment is suitable.
Choices and consent
I explain my findings, the proposed approach, relevant risks and alternatives before you decide. You can ask questions, decline a technique or stop at any time. Where appropriate, care combines hands-on techniques with practical movement and exercise advice.
Reviewing progress
We agree realistic goals and review pain, movement and activities that matter to you. The number of appointments varies. If symptoms worsen or improvement is limited, we reconsider the plan and whether another service is needed.
Planning your visit
Wear comfortable clothing and bring a list of medicines and any relevant reports. You are welcome to bring someone with you; under-16s should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
The Royal Parade clinic has three entrance steps and one internal step. Please call before booking to discuss access. Check online booking for current appointment days and times.
